Nancy Ryerson

Name: Nancy Ryerson
School: NYU CAS
Major: Journalism and English double major
Why are you here?
I’m interested in post-communist cultures, and the classes look interesting. I’m most excited for travel writing and contemporary European literature. I’m definitely not here for the food, but it’s been not so bad so far.
Describe your previous publishing experience.
Interned with South Magazine this past summer, working on their web site and blogging about strange and interesting southerners. I’ve also written a few things for the Washington Square News.
What’s your favorite media to follow?
The New York Times, Yahoo! News for celebrity gossip and recipes, and The New Yorker. Right now, I’m trying to experience some Prague media (with mixed success).
What’s your dream job?
Fiction editor of the New Yorker
What are you irrationally enthusiastic about?
Brooklyn – it’s my ancestral homeland. Here in Prague? The cabbage garnish that’s served with meals.
What would we not learn about you from Facebook?
I’m a vegetarian.
Since you’ve been in Prague, what’s weirded you out?
The amount of meat (although it’s been pretty easy to avoid), the extreme quiet-ness (unsettling for a New Yorker), size of Tesco (it’s overwhelming), and the bitter aftertaste of Pilsner Urquell. So nothing major so far.
One thing you know that I don’t?
How to play the bassoon.
